Not only beloved by generations of readers, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was one of Agatha Christie’s own favorite works-a brilliant whodunit that firmly established the author’s reputation as the Queen of Mystery. Luckily one of Roger’s friends and the newest resident to retire to this normally quiet village takes over-none other than Monsieur Hercule Poirot. However, the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information, but before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death. Then, tragically, came the news that she had taken her own life with an apparent drug overdose. 4/5: I actually did guess the twist, but not because Im much of a sleuth (or, yknow, a sleuth AT ALL). He suspected also that someone had been blackmailing her. He knew that the woman he loved had poisoned her brutal first husband. In this official edition featuring exclusive content from the Queen of Mystery, Hercule Poirot comes out of retirement in one of Agatha Christie’s ten favorite novels, which was also voted by the British Crime Writers’ Association as the “Best Crime Novel of all Time.” “Agatha Christie’s indelibly etched characters have entertained millions across the years and a love of her work has brought together generations of readers-a singular achievement for any author and an inspiration to writers across the literary landscape.” -Jacqueline Winspear, New York Times bestselling author of the Maisie Dobbs novels

On a personal level, I did not find the characters particularly enticing and had a hard time following the plot at times, but I would still recommend the book, especially to someone with an interest in 9/11 or the world wars. This book's overall commentary on the human experience and grief, both individual and collectively experienced by a nation, shows the skill and thoughtfulness of the author. This shows a theme throughout this book that grief from war and terror is universal. This adds an interesting layer to the story, as Oscar lost a parent in 9/11 and his grandparents, both children at the time, lost their families in the bombing of Dresden. This book is written from the alternating perspectives of Oscar, his grandmother, and his mute grandfather whom Oscar has never met. Along the way, he meets new friends and discovers more about those he already knew. He decides to embark on a mission to find every person named Black in New York City in an attempt to find the one Black who knew his father. When looking through his dad's things, Oscar breaks a vase and finds a key and a mysterious envelope labeled "Black". Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close follows a nine-year-old boy named Oscar coming to terms with life after his father's death on 9/11. Now, she was in trouble in Colorado, and even with Sam's offer of help, didn't know if it would be enough to save her. Dianna had spent the last ten years trying to make it up to her. Sam knew something was wrong, and was determined to help her.ĭianna had spent the last ten years trying to get over Sam. She had built a life that didn't include him, but couldn't help but notice the despair she wore like a cloak. She was a celebrity, and wouldn't want to fit into his world as a firefighter. Kyle's father, for example, spends literally three minutes with him each day, the time it takes him to heat his dinner in the microwave. Flinn follows the fairy tale's original plot points closely, but falters in her depiction of the story's bad guys, over-the-top caricatures that simply ring false in her up-to-date setting. Kyle's only hope for breaking the spell lies in finding true love as he reports online in meetings of the Unexpected Changes chat group (other members include Froggie and the mermaid Silent Maid). When he humiliates a girl at school, she transforms him into a horrific-looking creature. Kyle attends the exclusive Tuttle School in New York City and torments those poor unfortunates who lack his looks and wealth. Kyle Kingsbury is a gorgeous high school freshman, spoiled rotten by his famous anchorman father, a man who'd rather dole out cash than affection. Flinn (Diva) delivers a lighthearted and contemporary twist on Beauty and the Beast, and while there is nothing shocking nor any striking departure from the original, her retelling is eminently satisfying. “This year’s Moonbeam award winners confirm that books can change children’s lives,” says Moonbeam Awards founder Jerrold Jenkins, father of four children ranging in ages 11 to 21. The diversity of the winning publishers proves that promoting childhood literacy knows no boundaries, as medal-winners came not only from long-established publishers and university presses, but from small presses, foundations, and self-published entrepreneurs. Many of our award-winning books encourage children to be generous and compassionate, to stand up to bullies, and to believe in fulfilling their dreams. The Moonbeam Children's Book Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to celebrate children’s books and life-long reading. Whether she is recalling such lost friends as Coretta Scott King and Ossie Davis, extolling honesty, decrying vulgarity, explaining why becoming a Christian is a “lifelong endeavor,” or simply singing the praises of a meal of red rice–Maya Angelou writes from the heart to millions of women she considers her extended family. Here in short spellbinding essays are glimpses of the tumultuous life that led Angelou to an exalted place in American letters and taught her lessons in compassion and fortitude: how she was brought up by her indomitable grandmother in segregated Arkansas, taken in at thirteen by her more worldly and less religious mother, and grew to be an awkward, six-foot-tall teenager whose first experience of loveless sex paradoxically left her with her greatest gift, a son.
